Free and Inexpensive Summer Activities 2021

I’m so excited to be back with a new list of free and inexpensive things to do this summer. Here are just a few of my favorites to kick off the summer. Stay tuned for more. And hey, I missed you guys!
Susquehanna National Heritage Area is a great resource when it comes to finding new and creative (and often FREE) adventures for the whole family. They created a Rivertown Bucket List as a way to explore our local river towns. They also host tadpole time for ages 2-5 ($4), and free Tai Chi at the Zimmerman Center. For detailed information, the bucket list, and other events, visit www.susquehannaheritage.org.

Uncharted Lancaster is a great way to learn about the history of Lancaster County and also look for hidden treasures. The founder, Adam, was inspired by Indiana Jones and seeking out his own adventures. So, he created these scavenger hunt-style adventures throughout Lancaster County where you and your family can find treasures at historic landmarks or along familiar hiking areas. Guys, it’s cool, check it out. To learn more about Uncharted Lancaster, visit www.uncharteredlancaster.com.

The Tree House of Lititz, a newly constructed and remarkable playground located at 300 West Orange Street, will host Second Friday Family Fun Night on July 9 from 4:30-8:30 p.m. Magician Doc Yoder will perform, there will also be a DJ, and a couple of food trucks including Twisted Sisters Ice Cream and Shorty’s Funnel Cakes. There is no admission cost, and part of proceeds from the food trucks benefit the playground. For more information, visit The Tree House.

Splash Into Summer at Kitchen Kettle Village is a great way to kick off the summer and support the local non-profit organization, Music For Everyone. Held on June 19, the event features live music, a stilt walker, cheese stretching demo, yard games, make a jellyfish airplant with Perfect Pots (for a small cost) and more. Go to www.kitchenkettle.com for more information.

Speaking of Music for Everyone, they have a cool event coming up on June 21, called “Make Music Day.” Head over to Binn’s Park between 3-8 p.m., to perform “Flower Pot Music” by Elliot Cole. Show up with a flower pot and some sort of mallet and join in on the music making. The second set is a “Dueling Drum Circle,” where, you guessed it, a drum duel of sorts will play out in the park. Tables will be set up with snacks, drinks, paint for decorating your flower pot, and more. Visit www.musicforeveryone.org for more information.

Lancaster Rec along with AIM to Empower hosts free Yoga for all ages at different park locations throughout Lancaster City this summer. Follow AIM to Empower and the Lancaster Rec on Facebook for details on when and where you can join in on yoga or check out www.lancasterrec.org or www.aimtoempower.org to learn more.

OTHER EVENTS THIS MONTH:

  • Lancaster Community Event: June 19 from 12-7 p.m. at Clipper Magazine Stadium featuring crafts, vendors, plenty of food trucks, live music, activities, and local non-profits.
  • Beginning June 18: Outdoor movies at Clipper Stadium
  • All Summer: Library reading programs with lots of incentives for kids (check out your local library for more information).

How good does it feel to be getting back to normal? Enjoy the summer, seek out new adventures, and make lots of memories!

What are you looking forward to most this summer?
