Run for Your Life!

The Healthy Kids Running Series debuts in Lititz September 10.
Our children seem to have endless amounts energy and as parents we’re always looking for new
programs for children of all ages. We also strive to teach our children to be healthy and active. I
was recently introduced to a new program taking place in Lancaster County and I think you’ll be
just as excited to hear about it as I was.
The Healthy Kids Running Series (HKRS) is kicks off in Lititz on September 10. The program,
which began in the fall of 2009 in West Chester, is a program that introduces kids ages 2-14 to
running races and exercising, all while having a good time.
“The main goal of HKRS is to get kids excited about running, healthy living, and exercise,” says
Brooke Magni, the Lititz Series coordinator of HKRS, and an avid runner with two young
children of her own. “We are the first stop for many families when they start pursuing local
running programs, which is pretty awesome.”
The non-profit organization coordinates a five-week race series at Bonfield Elementary School in
Lititz. The fall series takes place September 10, 17 and 24 and October 1 and 8 at 4 p.m.
Different ages run different distances from 50 yards for toddlers to one mile for kids 10-14.
Participants receive points for running races and at the end of the series, kids are awarded
finishing medals and runners with the highest points are given a trophy.
“HKRS was started as an effort to help curb the issues of childhood obesity in America,” says
Brooke. “But it has become so much more in many of our communities.”
The Lititz program is also introducing a pilot program to include children with special needs.
This 100-yard Fun Run gives boys and girls of all ages a chance to run together or with a parent.
“Kids can walk, jump, skip, roll, etc. to the finish line,” explains Brooke of the pilot program. “I
have done extensive research about how to make the race more sensory friendly. I have worked
with some other organizations in the community to provide some other fun surprises!”
Children who participate in the Fun Run will not be timed or placed and the entry fee entitles
them to the race bag, tech t-shirt and a medal.
“HKRS not only teaches kids about running and racing, but it’s a great way for kids to learn
about, appreciate, and recognize the abilities of others,” adds Brooke. “At the end of the day,
seeing the smiles on the faces of the children as they wear their participation medals and beam
with pride makes it all worthwhile.”
Healthy Kids Running is also collaborating with Lititz Ambucs to help create Harmony
Playground, which is being constructed to accommodate special needs children.
“I want to create an environment where all children can participate in an activity that may seem
out of the question in some other circumstances,” Brooke explains.
Healthy Kids Running kicks off on September 10. Entry fee is $35 per child and includes a race
bag, tech t-shirt and medal or trophy. Parents can sign up online at
http://www.healthykidsrunningseries.org/race_locations/lititz-pa/
through September or register
on September 10 for the entire series. Runners also have the option to register on-site for
individual race days for $10 (includes race bib but does include the race bag, shirt, etc.)
Healthy Kids Running Series introduces our kids to the healthy and fun aspects of running. The
benefits are immeasurable and our kids will make new friends and memories and get some cool
digs for participating. I know I’m excited to check it out. Hope to see you there!
